Chances are that you're aware of Ted Cruz's 21-hour filibuster on the Senate floor this week in the cause of defunding ObamaCare. Media reporting has been all over the map regarding Cruz's marathon speech. The best way to understand what he's doing and how he hopes to defund ObamaCare is to read his own press release
posted on his own Senate website soon after his historic speech.
During a radio interview a short time after his marathon speech ended, Cruz told the listeners to call their senators with this message: "Vote 'no' on cloture; stand strong on defunding ObamaCare!"
The situation is that the House passed a Continuing Resolution (H.J. Res. 59
) to continue funding the government until December 15, which also includes a provision to defund ObamaCare in fiscal 2014. This House bill is now in the Senate's court. On September 25 the Senate voted to end debate on the bill by a vote of 100-0. However, the key cloture vote to proceed to a vote on the bill will come Friday or Saturday (September 27 or 28).
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid needs 60 votes to end debate and proceed to the bill in that key cloture vote. If he can get 60 votes, he'll be enabled to amend the House bill by removing the ObamaCare defunding provision with a simple majority of 51 votes, then send this amended bill back to the House. This would weaken the Republicans bargaining position on defunding ObamaCare.
On the other hand, if Reid can't get 60 or more votes on the cloture vote, then the Republicans would have a stronger position for negotiating to defund ObamaCare.
It all comes down to the level of grassroots support for defunding ObamaCare. That's where you come in. Please phone your senators' DC offices and their district offices
for the phone numbers), then email them as well
. Tell them: "Vote 'no' on cloture; stand strong on defunding ObamaCare!"
Sure the naysayers have said all along that this defunding ObamaCare strategy would never work, but its degree of success has already surpassed virtually everyone's expectations.
This is a fluid situation. What we need is for each of you to influence as many as possible of your associates to phone and email their senators with the message: "Vote 'no' on cloture; stand strong on defunding ObamaCare!"
Surprising victories have been won in this way. For example, the shutdown of the amnesty bill in 2007.Let's do it!
